Flute Lessons

Private Flute Lessons - High School, College or Adult

30, 45 or 60-Minute Weekly Lessons
Location: 1173 S. 68th St. - Springfield
Cost: $30/half-hour; $40/45-min; $50/hour

I generally recommend that high school or college age students take either 45 or 60-minute lessons. Adults, please contact me to discuss what lesson length would be most appropriate for your background and experience. Each lesson will cover the following topics each week: warmup, scales or technique, solo repertoire, and duets. Students with the full hour will often spend the final part of the lesson covering more advanced concepts, including such topics as intonation, advanced tone production, tone color, ear training, articulation, or modern performance techniques. Students should expect to purchase duet and solo repertoire books right away, as well as technique books when they advance beyond basic scales. I encourage students to bring their own music to play, as well as any band music that they would like to go over in their lessons.

Private Flute Lessons – Middle School

30 or 45-Minute Weekly Lessons
Location: 1173 S. 68th St. - Springfield
Cost: $30/half-hour; $40/45-min

I encourage middle school students, especially beginners, to start out with a 30-minute lesson, with the option to advance to a longer lesson length later. Each lesson will cover the following topics each week: warmup, scales or technique, solo repertoire, and duets. Students who advance to a 45-minute lesson can expect to spend more time on solo repertoire, and begin to learn more about advanced tone production and articulation. Students should expect to purchase duet and solo repertoire books right away, as well as technique books when they advance beyond basic scales. I encourage students to bring their own music to play, as well as any band music that they would like to go over in their lessons.

Private Flute Lessons – Beginning Flute

30-Minute Weekly or Semi-Weekly Lessons
Location: 1173 S. 68th St. - Springfield
Cost: $30/half-hour

Beginning lessons can be for students as young as 9 years old who wish to learn how to play the flute, but are not yet old enough to participate in band at their school. I recommend 2 lessons per week for the first four weeks, then graduating to once per week as students gain facility in their playing. We will begin with learning the basics of hand and body position, and how to produce the best sound, and then moving on to basic tunes, articulation and dynamics. Students should expect to purchase a practice book right away, as well as a duet book within the first 2-3 months.

Traveling Private Flute Lessons – Middle and High School Levels

45 or 60-Minute Weekly Lessons
Location: Within the City Limits of Eugene/Springfield (or within 7 miles of my studio)
Cost: $55/45-min; $65/hour

If attending lessons in my home studio is problematic, I am willing to come to students' homes or schools (if a teaching space can be arranged with the band director). My studio schedule is sometimes too full to allow for traveling lessons, but it is a possibility if I can find an available chunk of time. If two or more students can arrange a common lesson location for a set of consecutive lessons, I am willing to travel farther than the 7-mile limit. Please contact me with questions.

Group Flute Lessons – All Levels

60 or 75-Minute Weekly Lessons
Location: 1173 S. 68th St - Springfield
Cost: $60/hour; $70/hour+quarter

These lessons are designed for a set of two or three students to study together weekly. We will spend about half the time working together on warmups , technique and chamber music. The remaining time will be spent on individual solo repertoire, with the other students contributing and answering questions about each student's playing, as is done in college-level flute performance class.

Please understand, with the logistics of scheduling four people, missed lessons will not be rescheduled. These lessons alone will be charged on a monthly basis, rather than weekly.

Payment Schedules:

Weekly: Students are required to pay for the entire month's lessons at their first lesson of the month, unless special arrangements are made. If there are five lesson days that month, you will need to pay for five weeks of study. Likewise, if there is a short month (due to a holiday or vacation), you only need to pay for those planned lessons. Make-up lessons are scheduled ONLY for lessons canceled with at least 24-hour notice (or first thing in the morning if illness-related). Late cancellations or missed lessons are forfeit.

Monthly (for Group Lessons Only): Each student must pay for four lessons per month on the first lesson of the month. On five-lesson months, there will be a free lesson for all. But make-up lessons will not be allowed. (On a historical basis, students tend to miss 3-4 lessons per year due to illness or scheduling problems, thus the 5-week months with a free lesson will approximately compensate for those missed lessons).
